Teatterikeskus - Theatre Centre

Theatre Centre is an association of group-based professional theatre companies and performing arts groups founded in 1971 to provide services to its members and supervise their interests.

The membership of Theatre Centre consists of 41 Finnish professional theatres and performing arts groups. The members represent a wide range of different genres: theatre, dance, circus, children’s theatre, musical theatre, puppet theatre, improvisational theatre, mask theatre, clowning and performance art.

Theatre Centre

-          Weighs in on issues related to cultural policy and supervises the interests of its members.

-          Produces and disseminates expert knowledge from the field of performing arts.

-          Provides services and guidance for members.

-          Engages in wide-ranging cooperation.

-          Communicates effectively with members and decision-makers.

For Theatre Centre, supervision of interests is primarily a form of cooperation and an expression of the joint will of its members. It allows members to reach policy-makers with a unified voice that amplifies their message. Theatre Centre provides policy-makers with information about the operational preconditions of its members and the changing conditions in the field of performing arts. To its members, Theatre Centre provides information on the latest definitions of cultural policy and decisions that affect them.

The most important targets of influence are the parties and the parliament, municipal decision-makers, the Ministry of Education and Culture and Arts Promotion Center Finland.

In 2019, the goals of Theatre Centre are:

-          To increase the funding for arts and culture in the state budget

-          To increase private funding for performing arts by 20 million euros

-          To ensure that the reform of the state subsidy system for performing arts is conducted carefully and with consideration for small and medium-sized companies and specialised operators

-          To reform and develop the status, structure and peer review system of Arts Promotion Center Finland

Theatre Centre is deeply involved in cooperation with other operators and associations in the field of performing arts. Our list of partners includes Theatre Info Finland (TINFO), the Association of Finnish Theatres, Trade Union for Theatre and Media Finland (TeMe), Finnish Actors’ Union, Circus Info Finland, Dance Info Finland, Theatre Museum and the magazine Theatre & Dance & Circus, among others.

Theatre Centre is also a member of KULTA (a central organisation for Finnish culture and arts associations) and Pearle* - Live Performance Europe.
